Solothurn's Christmas Market, the "Chlausemäret"
06.12.2017 – 07.12.2017
"Chlausemäret" is the Solothurn dialect expression for a Christmas market (presided over by St. Nicholas or Santa Claus, as you wish!)
The first Solothurner Chlausemäret was held on 3 December 1981, the year when the newly-founded "Pro Friedhofplatz" Association mounted a trial sales promotion and advertising campaign for its commercial members. Since 1986, selected travelling market vendors have also been allowed to join in, and the opening times were extended in response to growing public demand.
Nowadays about 70 market stalls are set up on the square and neighbouring Stalden Street. Legendary highlights include the carefully selected items on offer − especially the Glühwein (mulled wine) from the Pro Friedhofplatz kitchen.
