One measures time in an unusual way in Solothurn: the clock at Amthausplatz shows 11 hours, 11 cultural highlights mark the year. January features a celebration of Swiss films, followed by Fasnacht (carnival). In May, Solothurn is Switzerland’s literary centre. The June sun shines on the Märetfescht (market/city party), the July moon on the Classic Openair (operas) and hot jazz pulsates through the August nights. In autumn there’s the Swiss Walking Event and the Swiss Health Event; in winter the St.Nicholas market and the Kunst-Supermarkt (art sales). All year round: happenings in the Kulturfabrik Kofmehl, theatre productions and, to lift your mood on Saturdays, the colourful market in the streets and alleys of the old city.
A hot tip: A stroll along the boulevards and the riverbank, with a visit to a bistro, will get you into the relaxed mood of this little town with so much to offer.
