From the early 13th century until 1798 Solothurn was a city-state. With the invasion of the French, the "Municipality" was created as the first city community. Solothurn received its most striking architectural monuments from the "great" period in the Ancien Régime of the 17th and 18th centuries.

This explains why Solothurn today markets itself as the "most beautiful baroque city" or "ambassador city". Equally important for the historical self-image is the fact that it was founded in Rome and has two of the oldest saints in Switzerland, Ursus and Victor, as "citizens".

But history did not end in 1798. Most of our institutions, authorities, corporations, commercial and industrial enterprises, the whole of our cultural life and our customs are rooted in the 19th and 20th centuries. So, if we want to understand the roots of contemporary life in our city, we must look at our present structures and customs from the 19th and 20th centuries. This is the task to which the project manager Verena Bider and the authors of the new "Solothurn City History: 19th and 20th Century" have dedicated themselves. The associated series of lectures by the "Friends of the Solothurn Central Library" will not only present the topics of this volume, but also highlights the entire history of the city of Solothurn since prehistoric and early historical times.
