Stoffartig is the unique fabric paradise in the centre of Solothurn's old town. The shop was founded by Sandra Friedli. The team is always on the lookout for something special and unique, something that sets us apart from other fabric shops.
Sustainability is a way of life at Stoffartig. With the exception of a few special fabrics, we offer all "GOTS" or "oeko-tex Standard 100" fabrics. For example, you will find fabrics made from milk fibres ("waste product" of cheese production), soya fibres ("waste product" of tofu production), bamboo fibres, Tencel or pure mulesing-free wool, for example from the Falkland Islands. You will also find unique patterns, our own DIY sets, mercerie and a small range of knitting wool.
Stoffartig offers a DIY workshop for use at the back of the shop. Do you have planned or unfinished sewing projects and are stuck? The Stoffartig team will be happy to help. Sustainable
- Sustainably produced fabrics are offered at 95% of sales. The fabric is slightly more expensive for the customer, but the price difference is reflected in the quality, the fair working conditions of the producers and the sustainable cultivation/production of the fibres and fabrics.
- You will find fabrics that are 99% compostable and are made from "waste products" from cheese or tofu production, for example. Sewing silk used to be used for sewing, but unfortunately it is no longer produced and polyester thread is still considered comparable in terms of quality. Stoffartig makes sure that the supplier for the production has at least a closed water cycle so that no toxic substances are washed into nature with the water.
- Did you know that there are "non-violent" silk fabrics? The lid of these cocoons is opened so that the butterfly can hatch. This reduces the amount of silk thread obtained, but no caterpillars are killed. These fabrics are also available from Stoffartig.
- There is organic wool-silk fabric (kbt, mulesing-free) which is produced according to the highest ecological criteria. It is therefore particularly suitable for babies' and toddlers' sensitive skin and generally for all garments that are worn close to the skin.

- In the home living sector, we work with a designer who supports producers in India, China, Vietnam and Morocco. She has products made there by family members at fair wages using local materials. In this way, handicrafts live on, as people can contribute to the family income with their art. You will also find "boho style".
- The team also looks at sustainable internal operations. Be it waste separation or the use/self-production of cleaning materials.
Stoffartig offers jobs for reintegration into the primary labour market after a serious illness and thus wants to bear part of the responsibility as a company. No distinction is made in terms of gender, age or origin when hiring staff.
Fabric Waste
- Fabric scraps are donated to charitable organisations. For example, the Allani children's hospice in Bern.
Volunteer members sew the fabrics and the proceeds go to families with seriously ill children.
