Concert 6 July 2025 | Mozart Festival Solothurn - Mozart and Casanova
Was Sie erwartet
Mozart honoured the greatest seducer in opera history with Don Giovanni, while Casanova is synonymous with a womaniser. Baritone Daniel Holzhauser and the Péridot string quartet present Mozart's seducer arias at the Blumenstein Museum.
Mozart created a monument to the greatest seducer in opera history with ‘Don Giovanni’. Casanova, for his part, is synonymous with a womaniser par excellence. Whether Mozart and Casanova ever met is not historically proven, but it is certainly possible. After Casanova arrived in Prague from Dux around 25 October 1787, it is likely that he attended the premiere of ‘Don Giovanni’ on 29 October at the Prague Estates Theatre. The multi-talented Casanova was not only active as a ‘broker’ director of the French lotteries and as a political negotiator, but also as a playwright, novelist and musician. In addition, Casanova had been living as a librarian at Dux Castle (Duchcov), 70 kilometres north-west of Prague, since 1785 and was therefore well informed about events in the royal seat. The fact that Casanova knew Mozart's librettist Lorenzo da Ponte well also speaks in favour of a meeting between Mozart and Casanova.
Baritone Daniel Holzhauser serves up famous Mozart arias with the string quartet Péridot and Peter Peinstingl at the piano, miming such eroticising seducers as Don Giovanni, Leporello, Figaro and Count Almaviva - in the small setting of the Blumenstein Museum.
