«Hamlet loses his father, the king. How? By poison, administered to the king by his own brother, Claudius. Fratricide? Yes. Fratricide. Uncle Claudius then marries Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. Uncle Claudius thus becomes his new father. A truly Danish situation! Ophelia, his skeptical fiancée, tries to take care of Hamlet. Denmark, to her: a peninsula. She tries to persuade him to leave. Love. Hamlet does not understand. Not Denmark, not love. He understands nothing. Ghosts wander. Polonius, the king’s advisor, entertains the court—or so he believes. Ophelia pleads: “Dream, rewrite me again and again!” and draws her conclusions.»
In Teuwissen’s dreamlike play, an actor moves through Hamlet’s world. He feels his way between comedy and grand gestures, discovering within the classical material new, gentle nuances. Teuwissen portrays his characters with sensitivity, seeking tenderness and affection amid tension and violence. With this text, director Mélanie Huber and TOBS! ensemble member Fabian Müller embark on a headlong journey between inner upheaval, comedy, and poetry.
