Marion Rothhaar and Regina Dürig develop a theatrical language exploring training methods and the pressure to succeed in rhythmic and artistic gymnastics.
Veranstaltungsdetails
The ‘End of the World’ gymnastics hall in Macolin is known as the national breeding ground for competitive sports talent. Caught between childhood and adulthood, youngsters receive cutting-edge training here. What dreams do they have of entering the world of artistic and rhythmic gymnastics - and how do they emerge from this system at the end of their career? What role do families and parents play? What do the pressures and procedures inherent in elite sport tell us about our society?
Biel-based director Marion Rothhaar was German rhythmic gymnastics champion and took part in the 1988 Olympic Games. Drawing on her own experience and the accounts of her fellow competitors, taken from the reports from Magglingen in ‘Das Magazin’, she looks at the mechanisms associated with these disciplines and the experiences of the athletes. Regina Dürig, winner of Biel's Cultural Prize in 2023, drew her inspiration from these stories to write texts for the stage. They reveal the light and dark sides of the fascinating world of sports: poetic and rhythmic.
This special kind of sports play is aimed at adults and young people alike, and allows us to understand and feel the distress of those subjected to the pressure of performance.
‘Neue Körper am Ende der Welt’ is a sequel to the production “Körper am Ende der Welt” by Marion Rothhaar, theater praesent (AUT) and maskénada (LUX), 2023.
