The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets
Stadttheater Solothurn
Theatergasse 16-18, 4500 Solothurn
Between a pact with the devil and magic bullets, «The Black Rider» turns «Freischütz» into a surreal nightmare by Tom Waits, Robert Wilson and William S. Burroughs.
Tom Waits | Robert Wilson | William S. Burroughs
What happens when the romantic «Freischütz»is plunged into the nightmarish machinery of the 20th century? That is precisely what «The Black Rider» does. The plot remains fairly close to the original: in order to win the gamekeeper’s daughter, the young clerk Wilhelm makes a pact with the devil. In return, the devil gives him magic bullets that never miss their target – except for one: the final bullet is controlled by the devil himself…
Surreal and filled with abysses, this dark and absurd parable is the work of Robert Wilson (director of the original production), Tom Waits (music), and William S. Burroughs (libretto). First performed in Hamburg in 1990, «The Black Rider» quickly achieved cult status. Director Olivier Tambosi and conductor Iwan Wassilevski now present a new musical and theatrical reinterpretation of the work. Following audience successes such as «Sweeney Todd», «Cabaret» et «Im weissen Rössl/L’Auberge du Cheval Blanc», this marks their fifth collaboration with TOBS!.
Song lyrics by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan. Original orchestration by Greg Cohen and Tom Waits. Dramaturgy and German translation by Wolfgang Wiens.
