Event details
With his only complete stage work, "The Rake's Progress", Igor Stravinsky composed a neo-classical masterpiece. The opera recounts the rise and fall of the young upstart Tom Rakewell, who is seduced by a tempting offer from the diabolical Nick Shadow. But the price is high: it is not only his soul that is at stake, but also the affection of his beloved Anne Trulove...
Stravinsky found his inspiration for this tableau de maneurs in William Hogarth's series of 18th-century paintings. Premiered in 1951 at La Fenice, this work illustrates the musical styles and forms of Stravinsky's masterly playing. The evocations range from Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart and Verdi to contemporary jazz.
Swiss opera singer and director Maria Riccarda Wesseling is in charge of the staging. Yannis Pouspourikas is musical director.
Running time: 3 hours (including intermission)
Recommended age: 14 and over
