In the glow of lanterns you will discover Solothurn in the evening. Their light will transport you to earlier times and make you see the city with different eyes. You will experience what it was like in Solothurn at night when there was no city lighting. Light was something precious that was only available in very limited supply. How much it meant to people is also shown by its use on special occasions (festivals, processions, customs). Darkness was frightening, so night watchmen controlled the city. It was less than 200 years ago that there were beginnings of organised town lighting. First oil was used, then gas, and it was not until 1896 that the first electric lamps burned in Solothurn. In the 20th century, night-time lighting became something we all took for granted. In the meantime, however, "energy shortage" has become the word of the day. Will light become a luxury good again in the future?
