A research project
by Katharina Ramser
World premiere
The Battle of Marignano in 1515 went down as the bloodiest defeat in Swiss history. The Solothurn artist Urs Graf was part of this slaughter as a paddy runner. Graf, born in Solothurn in 1485, was so enthusiastic about the "great slashing and stabbing" that he repeatedly put his artistic career on hold to go to war. Numerous drawings depict the camp life of the mercenaries and troop whores. But after Marignano, there were no more fighting heroes, he only drew the dead and wounded. The search for the great adventure turns out to be a gruesome look into the abysses of war. What motives drove the young artist to enter the bloodiest business in the world? Are they the same ones that drive young men today to hire themselves out as mercenaries in private armies or wars?
Following the production "Frank Buchser in America", Katharina Ramser explores another Solothurn artist's biography. The focus is on the question of the unbroken seduction of war.
