Weissenstein
Solothurn's "local" mountain
Description
The Weissenstein can be hiked from Solothurn through the wild and romantic Verena Gorge in a good three hours. A more comfortable way is to take the Weissenstein cable car from Oberdorf station (SO). During the ten-minute ride, a spectacular panoramic view opens up over the Mittelland, the Alps and the three lakes at the border of Jura.
Solothurn's local mountain is the starting point for one-day and multi-day hikes in the Jura. The Planetary Path leads over the Hasenmatt, at 1444 m the highest point in Canton Solothurn, to the Grenchenberge. Well-equipped picnic areas invite you to enjoy a barbecue. Numerous sinkholes bear witness to the holey limestone subsoil. In the well-tended alpine meadows, the deep furrows of hungry wild boars can be observed in some places. The Hotel Weissenstein and the mountain inns Sennhaus and Hinter-Weissenstein offer regional specialities in an informal atmosphere.
