Penthesilea. Ein Requiem
Stadttheater Solothurn
Theatergasse 16-18, 4500 Solothurn
At the walls of Troy, Amazons and Greeks clash as Penthesilea and Achilles love and destroy each other in a tragic duel of war, desire, and fate.
by Nino Haratischwili
Swiss premiere
Before the walls of Troy, the Greeks are bogged down in a war of attrition, paralyzed by an endless face-to-face confrontation. It is then that the people of the Amazons appear. Proud and formidable warrior women, they are led by Queen Nino Haratischwili Penthesilea, in search of Achilles, a once-glorious hero. She, to whom this is forbidden, loves him. And he, who cannot say it, loves her too. Both are exhausted by killing. But war is stronger than any heroine or hero. Thus unfolds an implacable game in which love and death are intertwined.
The Georgian author Nino Haratischwili revisits the myth of Penthesilea to turn it into a deeply contemporary story about war and the struggle between genders. She offers a bold rereading of the ancient myth. «Penthesilea. Ein Requiem» is part of Haratischwili’s theatrical trilogy devoted to the great female figures of Greek mythology. The magnetic force of her vast prose works, such as The Eighth Life (for Brilka), is found here in this intense theatrical duel between Penthesilea and Achilles. Director Sophia Bodamer signs her first production at TOBS!.
